Along one of Cradock’s most famous streets is the Butterfly Mews, offering comfortably rustic country accommodation in what used to be a busy stable yard in the 1850s.
Three former stables have been converted into en suite lodgings with twin beds. In addition, there is a family unit which sleeps four, as well as a spacious one bedroomed self-cater flatlet with full DStv.
The neat and beautiful garden is at its most spectacular in spring, when the roses are in full bloom.
Butterfly Mews is at 40 Market Street, where wagonwrights, wheelwrights and blacksmiths once repaired wagons, whips and horse harnesses for those heading north into South Africa’s interior.
Parking is off-street and secure.
All of the accommodation options have tea and coffee stations, electric blankets and heaters for winter, and fans for summer. The linen is crisp and the beds are comfortable. The rooms are serviced daily.
The rates for the Mews and the family unit include a light breakfast (optional). A simple homemade dinner is also available. Enquire from host Leigh Price about options and rates.
Butterfly Mews is centrally located, within walking distance of restaurants and shops, and just around the corner from the house where famed author Olive Schreiner used to live. Her home has now been restored and is one of Cradock’s most interesting museums.
