In the summer months, Nieu-Bethesda stages festivals, a New Year’s Eve March of the Lanterns and impromptu music performances by world-class players.
In the winter, there’s nothing better than to snuggle into a deep duvet in a Nieu-Bethesda cottage with the snow falling outside and a fire roaring in the hearth.
@Nieu-Bethesda, run by Ian and Katrin Allemann, matches you up with suitable accommodations, from garden cottages to luxury double rooms , backpackers’ quarters to large houses with wide stoeps.
Visitors have all manner of holiday choices, when it comes to activities. They can visit the legendary Owl House & Camel Yard, hike the hills of the area, see a working Karoo farm, or go book-hunting nearby and lunching at a local brewery.
Ian and Katrin also have The Karoo Lamb, which serves country breakfasts and hearty suppers. If you’re looking for Karoo books or local crafts, nose around The Karoo Lamb’s shop collection.
The donkey rides and the night-time skies are spectacular, and so is the permanent display at the Kitching Fossil Exploration Centre, which tracks the fossil background of the area and records the lives of some internationally-famous palaeontologists who were raised in the Karoo.
And the beautiful thing about Nieu-Bethesda is that if you just feel like chilling out over a couple of beers on the stoep of The Karoo Lamb and watching the world go by, you’re more than welcome…
