Lani’s Farm Kitchen and the New River Company are housed in two striking Karoo-style buildings along Cradock’s main road, JA Calata Street.
They are both part of Elanie (Lani) Lombard’s dreams to offer locals and visitors the best of the Karoo – authentic hospitality, great food and quality produce.
Lani is a farmer’s wife with an instinct for creating a relaxed and stylish ambience, an intuitive talent in the kitchen and a genuine wish to show everyone how wonderful Cradock’s heart is.
Her two enterprises – Lani’s Farm Kitchen and the New River Company – fall under the overall brand True Living, and they complement one another perfectly.
Lani’s Farm Kitchen, well-loved by locals for its delicious food, spacious leafy courtyard and smiling staff, is open for breakfasts, lunches and Friday night dinners.
This is also where you can find homebaked goodies like Lani’s famous ciabatta bread, fresh roosterkoek, cranberry and chocolate cookies alongside the best suurlemoen stroop.
The frozen section boasts true Karoo produce like venison and lamb pies, the Lombard’s famous family recipe sosaties, wild boar and cheese sausages, biltong pate and malva pudding – all made on Waterval farm.
You’ll always find the shop stocked with special gifts, including hand-knitted or crocheted blankets, bags, cushions made by farmworkers’ wives.
The New River Company is only a few metres away, with its attractive candy red-striped roof.
This is where you’ll find another specialty of this Eastern Karoo region – mohair products including blankets, scarves, wraps, socks, Camdeboo Leisure duvets and mohair carpets by Elsa Barnard.
The New River Company also stocks other high quality goods – covetable leather bags from Melvill & Moon safari outfitters, percale linen, more fine leather crafts from Els & Co, maps, antelope skins, and art by Rosheen Romer and Nicky Rosselli.
There is plenty of yarn for kinitting and for children, there are fun John Deere clothes and toys.
- The New River Company is also where Visit Cradock has its offices and where you can make accommodation or other enquiries from Suzanne du Toit. Contact her on 048 881 0094 or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
