Bibliophile Bookshop in Clarens

Bibliophile Bookshop, Clarens

Our bookshop is housed in a charming wood and iron building alongside the historical Railway Bus Depot in Church Street.

The Free State colonial architectural style and library ambience, enhanced by an extensive collection of Folio Society volumes, serve as a gentle reminder of a bygone era.

It is listed in the Lonely Planet Guide to SA as a highlight of the picturesque village of Clarens.

We have an excellent and ever-changing selection of new, used and unusual books in a wide range of categories, at exceptionally reasonable prices.

There is something of interest for everyone, from the serious collector of Africana to the weekend city escapee looking for a light romance novel.

We stock maps and road atlases, souvenir and travel guide books on Southern Africa as well as other books of particular interest to overseas and domestic tourists.

We also offer visitors a variety of games, puzzles and pastimes for those rainy afternoons when you curl up at the fireplace. A basic range of stationery requirements, gift bags and handmade greeting cards is available for your convenience.

For those who prefer to listen, we have audio books on CD and cassette. The music section comprises a fine selection of jazz, classical and world music.

An Artists’ Corner completes the picture: there are easels, canvases, paints, sketchpads and other art supplies and materials for the amateur artist inspired by the scenic splendour that surrounds us in Clarens.

Bibliophile hosts the Clarens Country Market in our front garden most Saturday mornings. This charming community endeavour affords local entrepreneurs an opportunity to display and sell their hand-made crafts and produce in congenial surroundings.

  • The name Bibliophile comes from ancient Greek and means “a lover of books or a book-collector”.
  • We are open daily from 9 am to 4.30 pm.
