Karoo Space has been invited to the UCT Summer School for two live audio-visual presentations next week, introducing the people and places of South Africa’s storied heartland.
At 1pm on Thursday January 29, we will take you on a long and winding journey through the Klein Karoo, exploring Route 62 and the little mountain communities on its flanks.
This presentation in colour is based on two years of research and travel, resulting in our latest book, Klein Karoo Magic, due for release in mid-May this year.
It’s probably the most fun we’ve ever had in chasing down stories, as we discovered new places, fresh experiences and some of the friendliest people in the country.
From Montagu in the west to Uniondale in the east, Klein Karoo Magic is a deep dive into the stories, surprises and quiet delights found along this legendary route – what CNN Travel has called “one of the world’s best road trip destinations”.
At 1pm on Friday, January 30, we celebrate 21 years in the Karoo with our audience, and there’s a special theme to this one as well.
Over the years, our city friends have come to the Karoo and often enquired:
“How do people survive out here? How do they make a living?”
Hopefully, many of them will be attending this show, where we introduce our extensive Karoo network of people who are earning a crust in the most innovative ways.
Hint: It all begins on the farms of the Karoo, where new energy and some younger ideas are taking agri-tourism to another level.
You will visit dude ranches, Zen retreats, ostrich feather palaces, attend wool festivals, go fly-fishing in the mountains, watch farm cricket, and drink of the agave spirit that tastes like its Mexican brother.
Then, where the road meets the farm, you will discover the joys of a good padstal, one of the Karoo’s most exciting offerings in recent times.
Following that, we take you into the small towns of the Karoo, where food and drink is celebrated and entrepreneurs are marketing everything from flower seasons to fine art.
And finally, you will meet the great handymen of the Karoo, who keep our old buildings in working order.
